Sculpture by Barbara Nelson

Creating the finest in Traditional Equine and Canine Sculpture

Welcome to the website of animal sculptor Barbara Nelson, an artist who specializes in representational limited edition bronze animal sculptures and one of a kind bird carvings. Regarded throughout the art community as a top tier bronze sculptor Barbara has been lauded for her realistic works of horses, canines, felines, and wildlife, particularly foxes and dogs. She is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists and the winner of the Ward Foundation Second and Third Best in World Life-size Championships for her wildfowl woodcarvings of a Ring-necked Pheasant and a Ruffed Grouse.

Working as a bronze and wood sculptor for decades has allowed Barbara to develop her methods and techniques to a point of superior artistry. Her degree in Wildlife Biology and work in that field as well as her constant familiarity with the animals and wildlife at her estate in South Carolina gives her expertise in anatomy and in the habits and characteristics of her subjects. The pursuits of fox hunting, show jumping, and game bird hunting give Barbara a unique and educated perspective of those themes, as well as an appreciation for functional artwork related to those disciplines, such as whip racks, cabinet knobs, doorknockers, and bookends.

Barbara was raised in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts. She has a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from the Univ. of Mass. and has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources. She served 5 years as an appointee of Gov. Terry Branstad to the Iowa Natural Resources Commission.

She is a Field master with the Whiskey Road Fox Hounds, competes in Show Jumping, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Albrecht SPCA Center for Animal Welfare in Aiken, South Carolina.

Dog owners, foxhunters, bird hunters and equestrians from Atlanta, Georgia to Middleburg, Virginia will appreciate the work of this fine artist.
